- What is 'War'? -
Since I had been trained to be Gundam Pilot I kept asking this question to myself over and over again. Everyday when I made sure that I still survive, I always brought this question into my brain. Somebody said 'The Perfect Soldier' was the soldier who can do anything without failing, but especially to me, it was just a fake title for threaten the enemy and there were some exceptions ,I can't find any answer to that question, that's the one..
'Peace'? Isn't that opposite to 'War'? But in this confused situation, it seems that the 'Peace' was the main reason why everyone raised for raging 'War', Romefellor said they would build the world 'Peaceful' but in order to do that they must have all the power, so that they could created 'Military Power' as an ideal leader and, hopefully, the leader would bring 'Peace'. Zech's White Fang and Treize's World United raged the 'War' to destroy all the Mobile Dolls, they thought if there was not any Mobile Doll left , Both Earth and Colony they wouldn't want to lead to any 'War.' This could mean the 'Peace' would take place finally. Relena tried very hard to prolong her 'Ultimate Peace' even it was just a 'Fragile Peace' for me. Now, another 'War' just began..
Mariemaia Barton, who claimed that she is Treize Krushrenada's daughter and wanted to succeed his position as a leader of World United. Her declaration of war which I saw with Duo now sent me here to investigate L3X18999, the colony that would be Mariemaia's base..
"Heero, what are you thinking?" asked Duo
"Nothing"
"I called you several times but you didn't answer, we're almost at L3X18999 but there must be a big troop waiting for us and our navigation system is no longer effective"
"I'm counting on you"
"Wow, you know, that's the last thing I'd expect from the Perfect Soldier.." he teased, yeah, I have never relied on anyone
before, but..now I'm too tired..
"Shut up, baka"
"Alright, alright…!!"
Duo managed to get through the big troop of Leos that guards this base, seeming that Sally and Noin did very well in
backing us up, Duo was yelling and cursing about here and there but I didn't listen, my mind was else where..
Another exception of the Perfect Soldier? Well, since.. since.. I met him, I.. I lost myself.. Am I too weak?
##Begin flashback##
In one of Quatre's mansions, since this is the time of peace, we gathered here for celebration and all of us spent time together. We lived as normal kids, that's the one and only thing that I've ever wanted. We have freedom to choose our future and so much time left to dream and so much time to make it real..(*)
Wufei was there, usual calm but somehow he seemed to be radiant in the sunlight. He has some thing that caught me
inside for a long time.. arrogant but gentle.. solitude but charming.. I could just watch him but I can't touch, and I could just loved him but I can't tell..
After Treize's death, he locked himself up and with curse., He always thought that Treize was just a blood thirsty general who wanted to conquer the world for himself, but he was wrong, we all wrong, he was a man who devoted everything to his ideal,… an ideal 'Peace' and to make the world and colony to be the safe home for everyone.. but Wufei just killed him, he felt like he was a stupid tool for Treize, running madly to nowhere in the palm of Treize's hand
I heard him crying during the night, he cried for Treize? I don't think so, he cried for his destiny. Duo told me that Wufei witnessed his own colony being blown up right before his eyes.. It was too hard for him to blame anyone but himself, if I were him, I would be angry with myself as I can't protect my clan, I heard his Dragon clan was there and the tomb for his
late wife was there as well..
-knock knock-
"Wufei.." I called him by the door
".. Who is it?.." I heard him sniff before answer me
"It's me, Heero.."
"Come in.."
I opened the door, his room was dark. He was sitting on the edge of the messy bed, I walked closer to him, his hair was loosed from his usual tight pony tail but I can't see his face clearly..
"You, know, if your mind is overloaded with something, you should talk to somebody like....."
"Like you?" his voice sounded quite sarcastic..
"Yes, I might not be a good listener like Quatre but.. I want to help you feel better.." I leaned to him even closer and I laid my hands on his shoulders.. he didn't protest this so I held his body close to mine. He might felt uneasy but he didn't stop me, he looked very tired and weak. Slowly he drifted to sleep in my arms..
##End flashback##
"Heero.. Heero!"
"What?.."
"You didn't listen to me again, I said we're in. Now get off!"
"Heero, we should take these Leos, just in case we encounter the enemy"
"Aa" I took one of those lined up Leos and we planned to split up and destroy as much Mobile Dolls as we could, Duo head to another direction. I piloted Leos and went deeper in to L3X.. and I found..
Altron..
My heart was stopped.. and the silence continued..
##Begin flashback##
It was late at night, but I didn't sleep. Wufei was still in my arms. I used to dream of this moment and now it became real. If God above didn't hate me that much for killing so many of his children, I want to asked him just one thing.. please let this moment last forever..
He might heard the raging of my heartbeat, so he woke up..
"Wufei.. are you feeling better?"
He tried to move away from me but I held him still, he said "Sorry to be such a burden. I'm ok now.."
"Wufei.. I have something to say to you for a long time.."
"What is it?"
Damn it, be calm.. this is Wufei.. just Wufei..
"I love you" He broke the silence
What? What did he just say? God he said he loved me! "Wufei" I called out "You.. you really mean it?"
"Yes.."
##End flashback##
"Wufei" I called him through the communicator. I was surprised, I searched everywhere to find him, but I didn't expect him to be on the terrorist's side "Why are you here?"
"You have no right to ask me that, Yuy. Now get to our business, I want to fight you for long. Come on!" He attacked me with Altron's light spear. He used to be the most reliable ally in the battlefield and now he is a very tough opponent. I was in Leo, there's no way I could fight with him, the only way was to make him stop. I didn't understand why he betrayed us.
"Fight me, Yuy. I'm serious!"
"Do you have an idea what are you doing?"
"Yes, I know. I'm fulfilling Treize's dream.."
"No, you're not. Treize didn't crucify himself for this war to begin" He's either a stubborn kid or a true warrior who lost his dream and master
"Shut up Yuy! fight me"
I was hit and my Leo didn't work anymore, then I opened the cockpit and asked him "Think about it Wufei, for your action is it right or wrong.." Then there's thick smoke leaked in, even how much I wanted to take him back but this is not right time, he was confused and this is the only chance for me to retreat..
I encountered with Duo later and found Trowa in the control room. Trowa managed to sneak in as a new recruit soldier. We made a deal and I made a contact with Quatre to send Wing Zero back to me because now Relena was captured by
Mariemaia Barton, the war was now inevitable..
I left Duo with Trowa.. now I was alone in the dark cold space, waiting for my Gundam
##Begin flashback##
I was awake.. last night dream was very good, I dreamt that I hold Wufei till his sleep and he wake up in the middle of the night to tell me he love me.. I smiled to myself, but when I looked around.. I was in Wufei's room, Jeez! it wasn't just a dream. I jerked up but he's not here.. the bed sheet beside me was cold, he must have go up for a while. I went down stair and found Duo, Quatre and Trowa talking seriously..
"What's going on?" I asked
"Heero, we just found this note from Wufei, do you know where he has gone?"
What? Wufei left? I grabbed the note from Trowa's hand
'I won't be able to stay here any longer
Don't try to track me down
Tell Heero I'm sorry..'
"What is it, Heero? Was this concerned you?"
I was stunned, Why? He just.. just.. left me like this? What did he think I am? What did he expect me to feel?.. I can't figure out where he left and can't make up my mind why he left..
##End flashback##
Wing Zero.. it was my true partner, if I wanted to shot down the enemy, it shot. If I wanted to fly, it flied. It wasn't just a machine? It must be just a machine but why I can controlled it better than anyone.. Why it complied wothy my order better than my own body?.. And now my true partner was with me again, we headed to earth together..
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The Earth from here was a big blue orb, I was born on colony. Did the people on earth even know how lucky they are.. They not bother dreaming of the clear blue sky nor deep blue oceans.. wind and cloud.. the descent moon nor the rising sun.. maybe they'll never know until they lost them all.
-beep beep-
The Mobile Suit indicator warned me of the approaching target.. that's.. Altron.. Wufei, why you keep fighting me, torture me..
"Yuy." He sent a contact
"Wufei.." I took a deep breath "Did you make up your mind?"
"I've already made up my mind since the day I left, now my mission was to defeat you!" He rushed to me, offended me continuously
"Wufei, why you didn't ever learn.. Treize is dead"
"No!! You shut up Yuy!"
"Wufei.." I tried to calm him, I didn't want to fight him but he keep attacking me
"..His intention now stays with Mariemaia.."
"No, Wufei. Her true intention was just to rule over the world and colony. She didn't even know what Treize died for and what Treize truly want!"
"You lie.." He paused "But if it true, I don't care anymore! What would the warrior do if there's no more battlefield?!"
"Wufei! How can you say that?! Did you totally forget what you fighting for? Isn't it for Peace?"
"You don't know me Yuy. I fight for two things, for Peace and Justice.. now the Justice wasn't served"
"It was served Wufei.. it just wasn't obvious. We'll let it to Relena.. We'll go back home together. And your Question what the warrior would do if there's no more battlefield, the answer was to rest.. You've done so much for this earth and colony, it was time Wufei.. go back with me"
"No!!" He still keeping denying my reason and he aimed his spear toward me. It was useless now, if I couldn't make him go back with me, I'll let him to do whatever he wanted . If my existence bother him that much, then take my life..
He did hit me and I didn't evade. I was falling from the sky to the beautiful blue world underneath. He didn't followed me.
I said to him before I hit the ocean surface "Please go back with me, Wufei. I need you.."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Hours passed, I was waiting for Wing Zero to boost up the whole system. It was heavily damaged, but I can't just wait here. The war must have started already. I've been thinking about what is the best way to end the war.. ::Kill Mariemaia::
yes, Mission Accepted.
Now I called out to Wing Zero, asking for it to be my partner for the last time.. I took a deep breath and took off to the sky..
I went straight to Mariemaia's base. I asked her if she still wanted to fight. She said yes and she would not defeated by me or anyone. The only problem was to get through such this strong underground place, the fastest way was to destroy the door. I wasn't sure if Buster Rifle could do it but I had no other choice left. I shot out once, twice.. and Dekim Barton the sub leader who was behind all this plan shown up and threaten me with Relena's presence. But I didn't stop I still shot out. I know Relena was a strong woman. I know she was ready to risk her life and the fact was, Wing Zero didn't have much energy left, if I stop now there'll have no other chance
Now my last shot caused the greater damage, Wing Zero was broken apart, but I can fulfilled my mission after this by myself
"Wing Zero.. Thank you"
I went in the base, my light of conscience was shining dimly but It wasn't over yet.. I kept running and stumbled. I tried to get up "Wufei, are you laughing at me? I might not as strong as you but I'll make you see, I'll reserve the 'Peace' and redeem your 'Justice'.."
When I reached to operation room, Mariemaia was shot and bleeding. She was just a little girl, there's no way she can set up all this plan. I might because of Dekim Barton whom his body was lying lifelessly on the floor. It's time to finished my mission.
I aimed my gun at her "I'll help you" I said
"Yes, thank you" She replied. That's mean she learned her lesson. She was just misled and used as the ladder for a freak old man, now it was over. I pulled the trigger, it had no bullet, I knew that..
"Mariemaia was dead, I don't have to kill anymore.." and my world was faded out, I was so tired.. Wufei, Wufei.. where are you.. ...
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
What? The light? Where am I? I looked around myself, it should be a hospital.
"You're awake!" That must be Duo's voice.. Was the war ended? Where is Wufei?
"Where is.. Wufei.?" My mouth went dry, I must have slept for a few days
"Er.. he was here too, do you wanna see him? I'll go call him"
"No, Duo, I'll go"
"Hey, but you just woke up from 3- days sleeping, wait here!"
"I said I'll go" I stared at him darkly, he sighed and helped me getting up. He guided me to the second next room..
-knock knock- Duo knocked
"Wufei, Heero wanna see you so bad, would you let him in?" Jeez, Duo did has a loud mouth, I couldn't stop him..
".. No.."
"Please Wufei.." now I couldn't stop myself too. I can't believe it, I was begging him.. seems like Duo was surprised too, but he left me there anyway
".." He didn't answer but I take that as yes. I opened the door and slipped inside, he's standing by the windows, staring out
"Are you hurt?" I asked
"No"
"Will you stay with us?" I asked again
"I guessed not"
"Why? Because of me?"
".."
"Wufei, you know I loved you, remember? And I still do.."
"That's your problem, not mine"
"But you.. you said you loved me.."
"It just a matter of time, it was my mistake. Sorry if that made you going crazy"
Wufei.. I don't want to believe him, it must be something behind this..
"Then say it Wufei, say it you didn't love me" even I passed so many deadly mission or how much I close to death but this is the moment that I feared the most, 'losing him' this two words are more than I can bear..
"..." He stared out of the window and never moved even a bit, didn't he feel anything?
I continued "If you say it, this will be the last time you see my face, I won't bother you again" I couldn't stop myself, why am I so rushed? it came from my eagerness? maybe, I've been keeping this question since that day he left, he hurted me so much. Even though I know that if I keep it inside me, I still can hope that he didn't really want to left me. I must be a fool if I ask, but I don't want to be fooled because of denying the truth
"..." He still kept his silence, God.. he's killing me.. He's so cruel, far more cruel than I thought. What? Am I crying? Tears.. it just a warm drop of water.. Duo used to said if we cry that's mean we're in the moment of blissful joy or on the other hands, we're suffered too much and we can't express our emotion in words, but for me in this situation, it didn't make anything better, it just taught me what the real torment is..
"Say something, Wufei, please.."
"Heero.. go away from me.. I don't want to see you anymore.." All the time since I entered this room he didn't turned back, he still crossed his arms on his chest and standing there..
"Then say it, say it you didn't love me, I just want those words"
"I hate you, Heero, now go"
"Wufei.."
"Damn it! why can't you just go!" This time he turned back to me, reached me and clutched my shirt tight, he pushed my back to the wall, even it was dark.. yes.., but I was sure that I saw his tears too, did he hurt?, did he feel it?
"Wufei.." I called him lightly
"What?!" he shouted back at me, his voice was hoarse and but it was mixed with sobs, I thought
"You join Mariemaia because you believe that she would bring the peace to this world and colony?"
"Yes"
"You fought by her side because you believed that would bring justice?"
"Yes.."
"You fought me because I didn't agree with your way of peace?"
"Yes..."
"And you lied at that night when you said you love me..?"
"..."
"Wufei.. answer me.."
".. No.." he loosen his grip on my shirt but didn't let go, he faced the floor and his body began to trembling.. He loved me.. now I know, and I will not let him go anywhere again, I slowly pulled him into my embrace, I used one of my hands held his waist and the other to lift his face, I looked deep into his eyes, there were soft, softer than I ever seen, and there's still has a trace of tears on his cheek, I licked it off gently before I kissed him..
"Then promise me Wufei, you're not going away from me again"

BURNING LOVE
by Bea
VROOM ~
A metallic sapphire Ferrari whizzed through the narrow entrance of the school, scaring half a dozen pedestrians, before reversing precisely into the only parking slot available. The driver had either planned his entrance to the S.J. HIGH SCHOOL carefully, or he was a natural master of the arts of appearance. Certain that he was the center of attention; he opened the driver door slowly and emerged from his exotic vehicle.
Immediately whispers broke through the speculating crowd.
“Wow~ he is so handsome!”
“Isn’t he cool?! The way he drive~ If only I get to be his girlfriend, and sit beside him… …”
“I love the wild look in his eyes! Oh, it’s like a ferocious animal, untamed and dangerous, but incredibly attractive at the same time…and his mop of unruly hair, I want to be the one combing it after we made passionate love … ”
The boy didn’t need to hear what the schoolgirls were saying to figure out the content of their discussions. Almost invisible to others, his lips curved up slightly; maybe this mission was not that difficult after all.
##
The new student became the talk of the morning in every classroom. As girls fantasized about him, guys began fearing their thinning chances of getting a date on Saturday night.
“Gosh, who is this mysterious new guy that had stolen the hearts of all the young maidens?! I hate him. Now Sheila is not even going to ‘look’ at me!” A guy named Mark complained to his fellow friends.
“Me too, me too! Lillian had been talking about him continuously. I am dead!”
John joined the group of defeated males.
“Duo doesn’t seem worried.” They turned towards a slender boy sitting at the corner. He had bright, violet eyes and a long, brownish braid.
“Hell, if I am as charming as Duo, I wouldn’t be sighing as well.” Joe dropped his head onto the table.
“Hey guys, cheer up~ Maybe things are not as bad as you think.” Duo gave them a wink.
Good job, Heero. Seems like I underestimated your talent of playing Don Juan!
##
When Duo returned to his dorm room after class, he was greeted by an all too familiar sight; Heero with his attention completely focus on his laptop, typing, digging, hacking into who knows where.
“Hello Heero~” Duo threw his school bag to the corner and dropped himself onto the bed.
“Hn.”
“That sounds strangely homely!” Duo rose on one elbow to face his friend. Flashing a sweet smile, he asked, “So how did today go?”
Heero stretched slightly in the uncomfortable chair.
“It sucks.”
“Care to elaborate?” Duo could even draw words out of the silent Heavyarm’s pilot. Heero was considerably less difficult, though not by far.
“All these girls~ Throwing themselves at me. I received a dozen love letters when I went to get my lunch, and a dozen more attached on my windshield. Sickening.” Heero shook his head in distaste.
“Don’t let simple, innocent love letters bother you! Wait till they show up half naked at your doorway.” Duo laughed outright when Heero cringed at this idea.
“Maybe this mission is more suitable for you.” Heero commented dryly.
“What? The Perfect Soldier admitting limitation?” Duo teased, “Well, not that I don’t want to help you out, but I am not exactly the right type of ‘prey’. By the way, how did you end up as my roommate?”
“I hacked into the housing department computer system. I don’t want to stay with any of those high school students. They live like pigs. At least you don’t snore, and you only leave junk food wrappers on your own bed.” Heero answered 'matter of fact' without shifting concentration from his laptop.
Duo looked down at the packet of Lay’s chips he just grabbed, and widened his eyes in mock dismay, “What? Are you implying I am the best among the worst of the pigs?”
Heero gave him a grin that meant “do you really want me to answer that?”.
Duo assumed a stern expression, “Heero~ You wound me!” Then breaking into a smile, he asked Heero, “By the way, how’s Wufei?”
The typing stopped abruptly. The long fingers that had been moving gracefully over the keyboard curled into tight fists until the knuckles turned white. Duo watched with worries as Heero went rigid.
“What’s wrong? Is Wufei OK?” He asked, alarmed that something might have happened to the Chinese boy while he was gone.
Suddenly Heero pushed the laptop violently away from him. Staring vacantly at the object that sometimes felt like a part of his body, he spoke, “I don’t know. He should be. I didn’t see him before I left for the mission.”
“What do you mean?” Duo asked. A thought occurred to him, and he jumped up from the bed, “Heero, did you finally confess your feelings to Wufei?”
“Yes… and no…” Heero replied, in a low, soft voice. He couldn’t completely hide the tremor in his voice, and it didn’t escape Duo’s attention how his jaws twitched in tension.
“You didn’t follow my ‘100% victorious wooing plan’, did you?” Duo tried to make a feeble joke in attempt to lighten the mood a bit.
“SHUT UP!” an unexpected roar from Heero. When he saw Duo staring at him, wide eyed, he forced himself to calm down. “Please, Duo. If you are my friend … …,” Heero faltered, and looked up from the empty space that he had been staring for the past 5 minutes, “… … then don’t ask.”
The shaking in his voice begged Duo to drop the subject. Unable to refuse such a request from his best friend, Duo changed the topic of discussion to their problem at hand, “So, … , hm … can you update me on this serial killer case?”
“Sure,” Heero’s tense facial muscles relaxed as a discussion on the serial killer who had murdered 27 young men was far easier to handle than one centered around a certain Chinese pilot. “The intelligence at the Preventer had solved the clue he left, and they determined this will be his next target school.”
“Which is what you have been telling them in the beginning,” Duo rolled his eyes.
Heero shrugged, “At least you trust me and you came here immediately.”
“But I didn’t find out anything.” Duo shook his head.
“Well, don’t blame yourself. This killer is careful. He wouldn’t act unless he had found a specific target. All of his victims had been oriental looking males who were highly popular among female students. So, we have decided to set a trap. That’s why I’m here, creating his …”
“… perfect prey.” Duo finished for him, grinning.
*****
One week later.
Heero was officially fed up with all the attentions he got.
I swear, I will die if the serial killer doesn’t make his move sooner!
Walking into the cafeteria, he secretly asked for a peaceful, undisturbed lunch, knowing from past few days of experience that was not going to happen.
To his surprise, the cafeteria was almost empty. He gave a sigh of relief when there were no sign of the few girls that had been most bold in their pursuit for him. Looking around, he noticed that there’s almost no girl in the dining hall.
“Heero~,” Turning around, he saw Duo waving at him.
“What’s going on?” Leaving the untouched tray of food on the table, Heero walked towards Duo.
“I’m not sure. Somebody told me that a strikingly cute Asian boy just arrived. Most of the girls have gone to “take a peep”. Looks like you are going to have a competitor!” Duo said cheerfully, laughing. “But we better go warn him to lay ‘low key’ for a while if he can. At least until the serial killer was caught.”
They didn’t have to walk far. The “cute boy” appeared at the end of the hallway, and stopped there, looking at them, arrogantly, waiting for them to close the distance in between.
“Wufei!” Duo shouted, and rushed forward. “Hey there! Wu-man~ How are you doing? I was trying to locate and contact you …” The words slipped out of his mouth. Since Heero refused to continue the discussion on the Chinese boy, Duo had been worried. He tried to get a hold on Wufei by calling the Preventer, but they informed him that Wufei had taken indefinite leave the day Heero left for this mission.
Wufei stared past Duo, looking straight at the Perfect soldier, who had frozen at the sight of his appearance. His gaze lingered a moment longer on Heero, before shifting his attention to Duo. The arrogant mask disappeared in front of his friend. He replied with a warm smile, “I am fine. There’s an assistant position for martial arts instructor here, and I thought I would be a good fit for it.”
Well, unlike Duo, lying is not that big a problem for me.
Duo smiled, knowing full well that Wufei was lying. Although the Chinese boy was an expert in martial arts, he didn’t have the patience necessary to be a good teacher. Hm… what could have brought him here then? Certainly not because of … … Haha… Duo chuckled mentally. This would be fun.
Ignoring the teasing wink Duo gave him, Wufei walked straight towards Heero.
Why are you here, Wufei? Why? Heero screamed inside. His pulse took off like a rocket as Wufei approached him. His outside, however, showed none of his emotions. His face remained impassive, as if the person standing less than one feet from him was not someone he had been thinking every second, dreaming every night, but some unimportant pass by.
Wufei looked him up and down in silence.
Heero stared straight back. The corners of his mouth were tight and pinched. He felt a lump rising in his throat. What do you want me to say, Wufei? What’s on your mind? Please, don’t just stand there and look at me. Said something. Speak first!
To his utmost disappointment and relief, Wufei turned on his heel and walked away without uttering a single word. Swallowing the lump that caught in his throat, Heero felt his inside hurt as badly as if Wufei had punched him there.
*****
“Heero~ Heero? HEERO!!” Duo waved a hand in front of Heero, and broke him out of his daze. “What’s going on with you? Ever since Wufei arrived 4 days ago, you have NOT been acting okay! I called you three times before you responded. I bet you didn’t even acknowledge my presence, right?” Duo sighed. “If you are like this, I think you really will be the ‘perfect prey’, TO BE BUTCHERED!” Duo raised his voice in exasperation when Heero didn’t seem to pay attention to him.
“Fine. You can stay in your shell all you want. But I am not going to see my friend joined the victim list.” Duo told him, “I think I need to schedule a long talk with Wufei.”
That got him the awareness he wanted.
“No. Don’t do that.” Heero said quietly, and Duo was certain he saw a flicker of sadness in his friend’s cobalt eyes.
“Heero, you have to tell me what’s going on between you two. Obviously something must have troubled you so much that you are no longer fit to carry out this mission. As for Wufei, I heard that he nearly ‘decapitated’ one of the students with his katana this morning. Something must be tearing him apart or he won’t be loosing control over his most skilled weapon.”
“Maybe he thought the student was me…” Heero murmured, smiling sadly at Duo’s monotonous babbling.
“What did you say? Anyway, I don’t want anything to happen to two of my closest friends.”
“I am afraid that’s too late.”
Duo frowned. “What do you mean?” When he didn’t get a reply, the frustration he had been feeling finally get the better of him. Pulling Heero by the collar, he demanded, “Whether you like it or not, you are going to tell me what happened.”
There’s no resistance from Heero. “Fine. If that’s what you want, then I will indulge you! Sit down!”
“Well?” Duo asked impatiently, after a long and unnerving silence.
Heero closed his eyes. The events were all coming back with the impact of something that had happened only yesterday.
“It all began with what you said to me the day you packed to depart for this mission…”
//@~@
“Money, yes. Passport, yes. Clothes, yes… normal black outfit, white shirt, leather pants, leather jacket, laughing face boxer, kissing red lips sexy underwear … … ”
Heero was working on his laptop as Duo went on with his packing in the room.
“Hey Heero! Did you see my black Harley Davidson boots?”
Heero shook his head.
“It has to be here somewhere.” Duo started going through every cabinet in the apartment they shared.
“Duo, why do you need to bring so much clothes anyway? You are going undercover at a high school, not moving!” Heero turned in time to see Duo digging into his closet.
“DUO~” His attempt to stop Duo was too late as the curious boy pulled out something that obviously didn’t belong to Heero.
“A white, silk pants?” asked a bemused Duo. “Heero, Heero. What have you been hiding in your closet all this while, huh?”
“That’s none of your business.” Heero reached out and snatched the pants in question from his roommate, but he couldn’t knock off the sheepish grin which seemed to be permanently imprinted on Duo’s face.
“If only ~Wufei~ knew that you kept his pants … hehe … Did you just develop a cloths fetish, Heero?”
“Don’t be ridiculous.” It was hard to keep a straight face with the ‘knowing’ grins Duo kept throwing at him.
“Now, I wonder how did you get hold of his pants? Did you … steal it, or … take it off while he was wearing it? Looking at the torn condition it was in, I would say,… hehe…, you must be in a hurry to get it off, huh?”
Heero’s fingers tightened unconsciously over the pants. He remembered the mission that went bad all too clearly. The explosive devises they set on Oz’s facility had explored earlier than it should, cutting short their value time to get out of the place. In the hasty escape process, they were forced to jump off a cliff. The Chinese pilot suffered a head concussion and a broken leg.
After getting both of them to a relatively safe abandoned warehouse, Heero took care of his injured comrade. He had to cut open the pants, carefully avoiding causing any further damage to the leg. There’s no medicine he could use for the pain as he fixed the broken bone. His heart endured a twinge when he heard the unconscious boy cried out in agony and a single tear slipped off the pale cheeks.
For the first time Heero realized he was different from an android. He was not a machine without feelings. It had felt strange to care for someone, after having gone without those emotions for so long. As a token to remind himself that he is still human, he had kept the blood stained pants from then on. It’s not like Wufei would ask a torn pants back when he had new stuff to put on.
Somehow, at some point along the timeline, he fell in love with the Nataku’s pilot. Perhaps it was because of the deeply buried fire inside Wufei, or maybe it’s Wufei’s strong grasp of honor and justice that intrigued him, he didn’t know for sure. But by the time he realized his feelings towards Wufei was different from the friendship between him and Duo, Trowa and Quatre, it was out of his control to terminate what his stubborn heart decided. The secret had been well kept. Even after the war ended, he feeling was not revealed. No one had guessed that his main reason for joining the Preventer was just to stay close with Wufei.
“Looks like you are in love with Wufei, huh?”
The question knocked Heero out of his haze. Fighting to get himself back to control again, Heero knew his secret was exposed to Duo.
“Then you must tell him.” Duo advised, all his amused expressions gone. If anything, he looked deadly serious.
“Hn?” Heero fidgeted with the tearing on the silk cloth in his hand, sighing inwardly. He wouldn’t and couldn’t afford to risk seeing hatred in Wufei’s eyes.
“Heero, I know what you are thinking. But, what if Wufei also feels the same way?” Duo said, reckoned the fear in Heero’s eyes. “I used to think that Wufei, the justice boy, was unfair. I am his best friend, but he was more concern for you than for me.” Duo added thoughtfully, “Tell him, ok? I don’t care what you do, but you must tell him what you feel. Give yourself and Wufei a chance at happiness, alright?”
Duo left the next day, leaving Heero deep in his thoughts. His encouragements had Heero facing the most difficult choice in his life; should he confess his undying love, and either be granted happiness, or be damned?!
After 6 days of debating with himself, (and ravishing a great numbers of flower petals for ‘to tell, not to tell’), he finally decided that he will confront the boy he loved
##
Heero paced outside of Wufei’s apartment for a long time, trying to work up the nerve to ring the doorbell. It was easier pushing the self-destruct button!
“Heero?” A smooth tenor voice inquired from behind. Heero turned around and saw Wufei standing at the door, arching a curious eyebrow.
“Oh, Hi Wufei?”
“My neighbor called me saying there’s a suspicious man wandering around my house for hours. I didn’t expect to see you.” Wufei opened the door wider, “Do you want to come in?”
“Err. Sure. Thanks.”
If Wufei noticed Heero picking at invisible bits of fluff on his shirt, or the way Heero carefully avoided eye contact, he didn’t make any comments.
“Why don’t you have a seat? I will get you some tea.” Wufei offered and disappeared into the kitchen.
Heero looked around the apartment. As expected, it was clean and neat. There’s no unnecessary furniture in the room, or any elaborate decorations around.
It’s just like his owner. Efficient and competent. Realizing this was his first visit to Wufei’s apartment, he took a deep breath, forcing down the shudder that it might also be his last … …
It was then he saw a silver framed picture on a small table beside the couch. The person on the picture was no other, but the deceased Treize Khushunada!
Heero picked up the picture; the confident smile of the former Oz’s general, the noble manner of ‘his excellency’ … all of which screaming at his defeat. You have lost, Heero! Lost! Even if you win the war, you lose what you treasure most! He doesn’t love you!! And will never love you!! Because he loves someone else!!
“Heero?” Wufei rushed out with the tea tray in his hand when he heard some startling noises from his sitting room. It was empty, obviously his guest had decided to leave in a hurry.
“Hai~’ Wufei sighed, putting down the tray, and he noticed the photo frame was laid flatly on the table, instead of its original standing position. There was a single drop of clear liquid on the glass frame.
##
“Get me another glass of Vodka!” Heero ordered the bartender. “Or better yet, get me a whole bottle!” He laughed drunkenly. Somebody, probably Duo, had told him that drinking killed heartaches. He will gladly test the theory tonight. Best if he can get completely intoxicated.
He drank a detrimental level of alcohol, only leaving when the bar was about to close.
“Treize~ You bastard~ When did you… ep… steal his heart??” Heero stumbled down the street, weaving a little from side to side, until finally reaching his house.
“Heero, you are drunk.” A familiar voice greeted him as he tried several times with no success to unlock his door.
“Hn?” Turning around, he saw Wufei standing beside him, with a frown on his face. “I am NOT drunk! Hahaha~ I still recognize you, WUFEI Chang~~”
“Fine.” Wufei was not about to argue with a drunk. He took the keys from Heero and opened the door.
The Perfect Soldier being drunk was certainly a rarity. Wufei winced as the strong smell of alcohol assaulted his sensitive nose while he tried to transfer Heero into the bedroom. Wufei panted a little as he finally dropped Heero onto the bed. Heero is definitely heavier than he looked! He didn’t expect Heero to swiftly tighten a grip around his wrists, and he fell onto the bed on top of Heero.
“Wufei…” Heero murmured, sniffing at the unique tea and soap smell Wufei carried.
“Stop that. Heero!” Wufei tried to move away from Heero’s heated lips crawling against his neck. When his demand was ignored completely, Wufei tried to pull his hands out of the iron grasp.
“NO!” Heero refused to let go, and in a flash he switched their position. Wufei found himself pinned roughly with his back against the mattress. Heero had him trapped effectively under a dead weight. Pressing his hands to the bed on either side of Wufei’s head, Heero leaned down for a kiss.
Wufei pushed against Heero’s chest to get the drunken boy off him. He had no intention of being kiss under the circumstances.
“Ouch!” He cried out at the slight pain as Heero used one hand to capture both of his wrists. He used the other to cup Wufei’s chin.
“So beautiful…” Heero murmured, bending down to capture the red lips again. Wufei turned his head to the side, and Heero missed his target. Forcing the defiant boy’s face back to position, Heero was not about to have his intention denied. This time he succeeded in giving Wufei a bruising kiss, but moments later a sharp pain cut through. He looked down and there were drops of blood on Wufei’s lips. He tasted the faint metallic taste in his mouth, realizing Wufei had bitten down on his tongue during the kiss.
You wouldn’t even let me kiss you… …
An unreasonable anger broke through, almost blinding the pain he had been feeling all day.
Alright, if you gave your heart to Treize, then I will settle for you body…
The wild violent look in Heero’s eyes must have startled Wufei, as he suddenly redoubled his struggling.
“I want you… Wufei…” Heero said, almost emotionlessly. “You are mine, Wufei!” To prove his point, he reached with his free hand to undress the Chinese boy. When he received no corporation from the shirt as well as the one wearing it, he simply ripped the blue tank top.
“KISAMA!” Wufei shouted. The strong hand traveled down to unbuckle his pants.
NO!
“Fight all you want…” Heero laughed, his breath thick with the smell of Vodka. Even clouded with alcohol, he was still strong and he soon had Wufei in the position to receive any treatment he decided to hand out.
“You are mine! Mine! Treize is nobody. I am going to proof it right now.”
The body under him went stiff for a second when the name of the former Oz general was mentioned, but it resumed its fruitless trashing almost immediately.
Heero was too dazed to even think of what he was doing. The wriggling of a strong muscular body underneath him had simulated a tight feeling down his groin. Desperate to release the pain in his heart, he sorted for a physical relief, not realizing how much it will hurt the one he loved with all his heart.
@~@//
Duo fumbled for words as Heero finished his tale, “You … you…. r ..rra..pppp……”
“RAPE!” The word exploded from Heero. “Yes, I raped Wufei.”
“But… but…”
“When I woke up the next morning, he was gone. I found his torn tank top on the floor. Knowing I will never be able to face him, I took the next flight and came here.” Heero looked up and saw the stun expression on Duo’s face. He let loose an uncontrollable laughter, “Ahhhh~~ Yessssss! I am a monster. Now you know it, don’t you?”
Unable to face whatever answer Duo had, he dashed for the door and ran.
*****
Heero didn’t know how long he had been running until he finally dropped onto his knees and crouched on the filthy, dirt-covered floor. He was at a back street of some industrial area. The surroundings were frighteningly quiet, but Heero welcome the silence. Images of Wufei shouting at him, struggling against him flushed across his mind. His eyes blurred and burned. Tears started to roll down his cheeks before he knew it.
Wufei, I am sorry. Sorry. I was planning on going back to face your judgment if I didn’t die in this mission. Why are you here? Did you come to deliver justice to me? I would welcome more than anything to feel the cool metal surface of your katana separating my head from my neck. Or if I am not worthy of that, at least grant me a death by your hand, Wufei…
Suddenly Heero had a feeling that he was no longer alone. His hand automatically reached for his gun, but a voice stopped him,
“Please do not move.”
Heero froze as he felt a gun pressed to the back of his head. He had been too careless!
“Mr. Popular! I have been following you. Taunting all the young girls’ hearts. If I don’t kill you, how many of them are going to die broken heart? Your type stirs up burning love; which would only end in destruction. ” The murderer hissed, a scent of maniac in his tone. “This world would be a much better place without people like you…”
Heero was waiting for any opportunity to fight back, but it never came. He heard the cocking of the gun, and braced for death. Wufei, I love you… Will you forgive me now that I am dead??
BAM~!
The shot was fired. Heero smelled the stinking odor of gunpowder, and felt a blazing pain on his arms. He missed? At an inch distance, he missed?
“Ouch~” The serial killer screamed as his gun was kicked out of his grip, and a powerful vertical flying kick sent him sprawling to the floor, courtesy of Wufei’s ferocious feet. Heero stared in awl as the gravity-defying Chinese boy whirled around and engaged in some serious hard-ass actions.
“That’s for hurting Heero! You jerk!” Wufei might not be a sadist that enjoyed inflicting pain, but he had no problem delivering that in the name of justice, especially to one that had hurt his friend! After making sure the serial killer was no longer a ‘potential threat’, he turned and walked towards Heero.
Ignoring the looks Heero had been giving him, he knelt down and reached for Heero’s injured arms. Letting out a breath that he didn’t know he was holding, Wufei said, “It’s ok. The bullet didn’t shoot through any bones. Just a minimal injury.”
“Why do you care?”
“Huh?”
“Why don’t you just let him shoot me?”
“Are you nuts!” Wufei exclaimed. “Just stand by and let the bastard claimed my friend’s life? What do you think I am?”
“Friend?” Heero turned away before Wufei could see the tears in his eyes.
“I do consider you a friend, whether you like it or not. But if you are so offended by that, I am sure I can live without your friendship!” Mistaken Heero’s expression, Wufei retorted hoarsely.
“No!” Heero blurted out, grabbing Wufei’s arms. “But …, how could you…still… after…” He faltered.
“What do you mean?” Confusion crossed the Chinese boy’s delicate features.
“After I raped you, damn it!” Heero looked away, waiting for the blow that never came.
“Heero,” Wufei sighed. “How much did you remember about that night?”
“I had you trapped underneath me. I tore away your clothes, kissing you, then I reached for your pants, and I … I …”
“And you dropped your head against my chest and started crying like a baby.” Wufei filled in the gap between Heero’s memories.
“What?” Heero asked dumb folded.
Without looking at the boy beside him, Wufei continued, “You cried, murmuring, ‘Wufei, I love you.’ over and over.”
Heero fought back a surge of hope. So I didn’t commit the heinous crime? Maybe I still have a chance to patch things up… …
“Heero, you didn’t rape me.” Wufei stated clearly, staring straight into his eyes.
“Then why did you disappear the next morning?”
Wufei’s face took on a faraway look for a moment, “Because, when I finally heard the words I so wanted to hear from you, I couldn’t figure out if you mean it, or is it merely the influence of alcohol. I have to get away, trying to figure it out. Secretly I hope you mean what you said, but I couldn’t decide. When I returned from my meditation, you were gone. I followed you here, hoping you would make it clear, but you didn’t speak to me when we met.” Suddenly feeling his throat dry, he paused for breath and courage, “So, I just want to know, did you mean what you said?”
When he didn’t get a reply, he let out a harsh sound, half-laugh, half-sob. I guess it’s the alcohol. Heero doesn’t love me!
He was surprised when Heero put an arm around him, but he didn’t hesitate to clutch closer.
Heero held him, stroking his back and marveling at this feeling of having him close. “But, what about Treize? I saw his picture on your table stand.”
“You are way wrong if you think I love him.” Wufei shook his head. “He was a worthy opponent, an ‘eternal friend’ that I do miss. Maybe if I never meet you, I will have fallen for him. But, Heero, I love you!”
Heero stroke a stray strand of hair back from Wufei’s cheek. “I love you too, Wufei.” Bending down, he gently pressed his lips onto his heart’s desire’s. The kiss was tender, sweat, completely unlike the one a while ago.
A little breathless after finally being released from the kiss, Wufei’s voice was muffled against Heero’s neck. “I didn’t realize you were such a good kisser, Heero-”
“You never give me the chance.” Heero said, slipping an arm around his beloved’s waist and kissed him again. Encircled by the recent confessed feelings, they never realized the body laying not far away stirring into motion and very, very slowly crept towards a metal object. The long, bony fingers grabbed the gun he had dropped, slowly pointing towards the embracing couples, and the index fingers trembled to press down.
“Heero! Wufei! Look out~~” Somebody shouted from a far. At the same time, they heard two gunshots being fired almost simultaneously.
When everything cleared, Heero saw Duo standing behind the serial killer, with his gun raised and still smoking. The shot had claimed the mass murderer’s life.
There were two gunshots. One claimed the bastard’s life, what about the other?
Fear.
An echo of that fear was in Duo’s eyes as well, before he dropped his gun and rushed forward.
Heero felt a warm, sticky liquid on his palm, and Wufei’s body sagged motionless against him.
NO!
His spine went to ice. Wufei was shot.
“Heero! Quick, we have to get him to a hospital. I am calling an ambulance. You try to stop the bleeding!” When Heero didn’t respond, Duo screamed in frustration, “HEERO~ Do you want Wufei to die!”
The devastating expression on the normally unreadable face scared Duo.
Founding a sudden strength, Heero cradled the critically wounded boy into his arms. He tried to applied pressure on the wound to stop the bleeding, and his hands were soaked by fresh pouring blood.
NO~ Wufei! Stay with me! I love you! I will not let you die. I will NOT LET YOU DIE!

“Get ready the 3rd Operation Room! Patient is a 16-year-old male, shot at the chest. Condition is extremely critical … …” The Emergency Room buzzed into actions as the ambulance stopped to unload its patient. A pale, lifeless body of a Chinese boy was brought through, quickly being transferred to the operation room.
“I am sorry, but you can’t follow.” One of the ER nurses stopped the two boys that came together with the ambulance. Their expressions told her everything she needed to know; the shot victim must have been someone very dear to them.
The one with wild hair completely ignored her words. He shoved passed her towards the operation room. Security guards rushed to block his way, but there was strength in him that was not apparent from his slight build. Everyone around stared in awe as he sent all four of the bulky, six feet tall security guards tumbling to the floor. While the nurse debated to call for more security, the other boy with a long braid solved her dilemma.
“Heero!” Duo grabbed at the frantic Perfect Soldier’s shoulder. “STOP! You are not helping Wufei!”
Heero ceased all motions at the mention of the name of his beloved.
“The hospital is doing their best to save his life. You don’t want to get in the way, do you?” Duo said in a calm, soothing voice; knowing very well the destructive power Heero had in him.
“Maybe their best is not good enough.” Heero murmured and forced himself to calm down. He would do anything in order to save Wufei. By acting like a mad person was not the best way to help.
I need a miracle. A miracle?! Ah Yes! The Hands of Miracles!
Heero disappeared for a while and then he was back with his laptop. He started logging onto his laptop and typing away in frenzy. Duo was worried as hell for both his friends; mainly for the one in the operation room struggling for life. He stared at the laptop computer screen blankly for a long time before registering Heero was hacking into a bank system. Why would he be doing that at this moment?
He held back his question as he watched Heero let out a sigh and hit enter to “Transfer” the 1 million credits he just managed from the bank into another account. When Duo saw the name of that account, a surge of hope flickered in his violet eyes.
Closing the laptop, Heero silently begged fate not to be too cruel on him.
If there’s a surgeon that can save Wufei, it would be the one without a doctor’s license, the one who would perform any operation as long as you met his demand for a large sum of operation fees. The man that they called the hands of miracles, the ghost of surgery; Black Jack. (1)
A man with the strangest face walked in; there was a distinctive scar diagonally in between his eyes, separating two tones of skin color on his face. And his hair, the front part was white as snow, while the rest was dark. Regardless of his bizarre appearance, there’s an ardent confidence in his eyes that made any other normal looking fellows shrink down from him. Unless of course, the person was one of the ex-gundam pilots.
“Dr. Black Jack?” Heero asked.
“Yes. Where is my patient?”
Before Heero could answer, the doctor that had been responsible for Wufei emerged from the surgery room. He saw the man standing beside Heero and he forgot the obligation to be quiet in a hospital, “Black Jack! What the hell are you doing here?”
“I was requested to save this young man’s love one’s life.” Black Jack answered serenely.
“No way I am going to let you take over my patient. And your type of unlicensed doctor had no business here at our grand hospital. Get out immediately or else…” The doctor broke off abruptly when he felt a handgun pointed towards his head. His heart skipped a beat as Heero stared at him with cold fury.
“You … you…”
“Shut up.” Heero ordered. Without turning, he spoke, “Dr. Black Jack, I think it’s time for you to do what you came here for. I am sure none of them will bother you.”
“Oh, thanks.” Black Jack looked pleasantly surprised. He liked this young man! Usually he was the one that had to do the nasty task of “convincing” the doctors who would rather loose a patient than ‘loose face’. He proceeded into the surgery room without further delays.
Heero retreated his weapon and ignored the shaking doctor. He sat down beside Duo like a statue. There was nothing else that he could do, besides waiting.
*****
8 hours 26 minutes 31 seconds later.
The surgery door opened.
“He will recover.”
That’s the best thing Heero had ever heard in his life. All his energy drained and he felt his knees weak.
“Heero! Did you hear that! Wufei is okay~ He made it!!” Duo burst out in joy, and threw his arms around his friend. Turning around, he asked Black Jack, “So when can we get to see him?”
“Maybe tomorrow. I don’t want to risk having him infected. He should recover fine.”
##
“Heero, he is going to be alright.” Duo sighed and repeated that again to Heero, as well as to himself, as a reminder that they didn’t lose their friend.
Heero nodded. He was still worry, because Wufei had not waken up, but world’s best surgeon had assured him that Wufei was not going to die, and the sleep was mostly due to the drug used.
“By the way,” Duo paused, “I was wondering how did things work out between you and Wufei? If you don’t mind me asking about it now.”
“Well,” Heero actually welcomed the distraction. Besides, talking about his lover reduced his anxiety. “Wufei saved me from the attack of the serial killer, and I found out I never did rape him.” Blushing slightly, he told Duo how they confessed their feelings to each other.
Duo listened thoughtfully, “You know what, Heero? When you told me you did that horrible act, I didn’t believe it. You wouldn’t hurt Wufei; even in the state of your subconscious, you will never allow yourself to harm him.” Beaming, Duo continued, “I am happy for you two.”
Heero’s face fell, his mind drifting back to the incident last night. “I should have protected him. It’s my fault he was shot.”
“Stop blaming yourself, Heero! Wufei is my best friend, and I know he would be yelling ‘injustice’ if he knows you are thinking that way!” Flipping his braid to the back, Duo said with a mock grin, “I am warning you Heero, if Wufei ever complained about you, I am going to take him away from you! So you better be good and make him very happy!”
“Yes, Duo!” a small grin appeared on Heero’s face, knowing he would do anything to see Wufei happy, and hoping for a chance at that.
*****
The next day, Heero and Duo were surprised when their request to see their friend was denied.
“What do you mean we cannot see him?” Duo asked not too politely.
“A hospital is authorized to deny any visits if the patient’s condition is serious.”
“But Dr. Black Jack said that we can see him today.” Duo argued.
“That unlicensed piece of trash? What does he know? Besides, we have ‘asked’ him to leave this morning. I think he left for Bretagne, probably go there to cheat some more money!” The doctor snorted, “We let him performed the surgery only because you truly ‘insisted’. Now that his job was finished, it would be a disgrace for the hospital if he is even seen on the premise.”
“If I ‘insist’ that I want to see Wufei now, are you going to let us see him?” Heero asked casually, but his expression was anything but that. His hand pausing on the handle of the gun that he always carried with him.
The doctor’s face darkened. “You! Are you planning on using the same tactic last night when you forced the other doctor to handover the patient to Black Jack?”
“Maybe… maybe not. It all depends.” Heero fixed his death glare on the arrogant doctor.
Involuntarily, the doctor took a step backward. “Are you trying to … threaten me? I…I’m not afraid.” The doctor tried to look fearless but failing miserable under the Wing’s Pilot and Shinigami’s scrutinizes. “I am telling you the truth, okay? Wufei Chang’s condition doesn’t permit any outside visitor. We… we will informed you immediately when the situation changed.” These skinny kids were more frightening than 20 massive bullies added together.
“Alright,” Duo grabbed at Heero’s elbow, turning him away from the shuddering doctor, “Could you please keep us posted on his condition? We were really concern about him.”
“Sure. Of course. No problem.” The doctor kept nodding in agreement even after the two were out of sight.
*****
It was two weeks later before they were finally allowed to see Wufei.
“Wufei!” Heero rushed towards the pale looking boy and knelt beside the bed. He felt like crying as he finally managed to see Wufei alive with his own eyes. He is alive. Alive!
“Heero~” Wufei reached out and gently traced Heero’s face, “I am okay now.”
“Wu-man, you gave us such a scare back then!” Duo came closer, happy. “I guess you miss Shinigami’s close call! Haha~”
“Duo~ It’s good to hear your laughter.” Wufei smiled weakly.
*****
It was another two weeks before the gun shot wound healed completely, and Wufei was discharged from the hospital.
“Wufei, would you like to come to stay with me? It would be easier to take care of you.” Heero asked.
“And there’s an extra room in the apartment Heero and I shared.” Duo said, smiling, “That is, if you prefer to have your own room. Or I’m sure Heero is more than willing to share his bedroom, and bed, among other things.”
Heero blushed a little at the implication, but looked at Wufei expectantly.
“That sounds great. I appreciate you taking care of me, Heero.” Wufei smiled gently, and laid his head on Heero’s shoulder.
Heero hugged the Chinese boy near, closed his eyes and sighed in content. Everything is going to be well now. Everything is so perfect. We are finally together, Wufei, my love.
He never noticed an evil grin creeping onto Wufei’s face, or the way he quickly wiped that off and assumed a neutral, gentle expression.
*****
“Chang, glad to have you back to work!” Une greeted Wufei, returning to work with Heero and Duo beside him.
“Thank you, Ms. Une.” Wufei replied politely and sat down at his desk.
Switching on the computer, he frowned slightly as the cursor blinked, prompting for a user password.
Username: Wufei Chang
Password: _
Hm… This could be a problem. Well, not a serious one. Let’s see if I can bypass it …. …
After much effort, he was logged into the account.
Alright, now let’s go to the file for Dr. Katsushika’s case…Ah, here it is! What?! Another password?
He tapped at his lower lips for a moment, before starting to bypass the security system on that file.
“Wufei, why are you hacking into your own filing systems?” a quiet voice asked from behind.
“Huh?~” Wufei almost jumped at the sound.
Heero was standing behind him with a puzzle expression on his face. What is Wufei doing?
“Well, I forgot my password.” Wufei explained. “You can forget a lot of things after being shot and laid on bed for weeks. Lacking oxygen to the brain for a few times probably contribute to that as well.”
“Oh,” Heero felt bad for his lover. Wufei used to have perfect memory. Now he couldn’t remember his own password! “If you want, I can hack into your system and retrieved the passwords for you.” Heero offered.
“That’s great. Heero, you are the best.” Wufei moved aside to let Heero work on his computer.
“By the way, why did you need the information for Dr. Katsushika’s case?” Heero asked as he started working on the task. “That case was already closed. The mad scientist committed suicide in his jail room after being sentenced for 409 years of prison time, which probably served him right.” He turned around just in time to see Wufei staring at him coldly. The angriness in his lover’s eyes made him wonder if he said something upsetting. “Wufei? Did I say something wrong?”
“Huh? Oh, no. Of course not. He deserved that punishment.” Wufei loosened a smile, which didn’t quite reach his eyes.
“Here. It’s unlocked.” Heero extracted the files for Dr. Katsushika’s case. He didn’t want to make the mistake of saying something else that will distress his lover.
“Thanks, Heero.” Wufei said with a clear indication of dismissal in his voice. Heero took the hint and walked away, but not before giving a long, thoughtful gaze at the sight of Wufei concentrating on his computer.
“The background. The trial. The evidence…” Wufei scanned through the list of files.
Damn. It’s not here. Hm… Where could it be then? Narrowing his eyes, Wufei thought for the possibilities. It has to be with either Duo or Heero.
*****
“Why would Une want to call a meeting at this hour?” Heero groaned, but got up to put on his clothes. He passed by Wufei’s bedroom and saw the light was out. Opening the door a few inches, he carefully block out the light from outside, not wanting to wake up his lover. He saw Wufei peacefully asleep on the bed. Smiling to himself, Heero closed the door soundlessly and left the apartment.
Wufei shot up from his bed the moment he heard the sound of the front door clicking closed. Grinning, he walked into Heero’s room and started hacking into the computer.
The security was tighter than he could ever imagine. It took him hours and he was still block out of the system. Looks like unless Heero granted permission, nobody could access his system.
Well, let’s see if I can make him grant access. Wufei crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes.
##
Peering through the curtain, Wufei saw Heero pulling into the parking lot.
Let the show began.
Heero opened his bedroom door, and before he could switch on the light, he saw Wufei sitting at the edge of his bed, with a grin he couldn’t quite comprehend.
“Wufei, what are you doing here?” He asked carefully. There were many questions on his mind.
“Waiting for you.” Wufei’s eyes glistened in the dark, like a wildcat waiting for its prey.
Heero took a step forward, then stopped there, “Wufei, why did you fake Une’s call to me?”
Just as expected, and I have an explanation ready. Wufei’s lips curled into a sensual smile, “I wanted to get you out to have time to arrange for a surprise.” He spread his hands and Heero took in his room. There were candles on the floor, and some at the table and shelves. The faint burning of candles created a mystery and erotic atmosphere. When his gaze returned to his lover on the bed, he noticed Wufei was dressed almost too revealing. His heart started pounding in his ears, as he took the invitation in Wufei’s mesmerizing eyes and walked forward until his knees bumped into the bed and a hand pulled him down onto a warm, hard body.
“Heero~ did you miss this?” Wufei asked, kissing his throat lasciviously. “Did you?” He asked again, moving towards his ears this time, hungrily sucking at Heero’s ear lope.
“Hn…?” Heero could only moaned.
“That’s not really an answer, you know?” Wufei nibbled teasingly down the side of his neck. His hand slipped down to the sensitive area just beneath Heero’s belly.
Pleasure was building up to an almost unbearable level, and then the expert hand suddenly stopped.
“Heero, you love me, right?” Wufei asked, blowing hot breath against his ears.
Heero nodded a little numbly.
“Then there shall be no secrets between us.” The hand started moving again, arousing Heero’s desire further. “I want to trust you with everything, and I hope you would do the same too.” Wufei muttered. “Would you trust me with your computer password?”
WHAT?
Heero would have jumped off the bed if not for at that exact moment Wufei’s thumb played a trick at his carnal root. Unable to argue or think straightly, he laid there and let Wufei manipulate his body into an instrument of pleasure.
“Relax, enjoy.” Wufei almost purred. This is too easy! I can’t believe Heero is this easy to maneuver. Well, I am sure he wouldn’t be able to hold back the code once we engaged in the serious action.
Something is out of place. Something is not right. Heero’s mind screamed out at him, but his body told him everything was perfect. Wufei leaned down for a gentle kiss, and the hand that had been touching him moved away to undress him.
Get out now! Heero suddenly pushed Wufei off him and bolted for the door. He didn’t know what he was doing, but a voice in his head was telling him to get away while he still can, before he was swallowed up by the carnal needs and made a big mistake.
Wufei stared unbelievable at the door. What the hell!
Wiping his lips with the back of his hand, he thought for a backup plan.
Duo.
Duo was truly surprised when he got into the apartment to see a half drunk Wufei with teary eyes.
“Wufei, what’s wrong?” He quickly knelt down beside the crying boy on the floor.
“Duo!” Wufei gasped, his arms went around Duo, hugging him tightly.
Taken by surprise, Duo hesitated a moment, then returned the embrace.
“I hate Heero!” Wufei said, tears welling in his eyes. “We broke up.”
“What?” Duo was expecting anything but that.
##
Heero was walking alone in the empty streets. He couldn’t figure out what had prompted him to escape from the house.
What’s wrong with me? There I have a gorgeous boyfriend wanting to make love with me, and I run away. Heero felt like knocking his head against the wall. He sensed that something was way off, but was unable to pinpoint exactly the problem.
Wufei had been acting differently ever since he woke up from the coma. I would say he was a completely different person if not for the face was clearly his. But he is still Wufei. I must go home now and apologize. Heero wandered back home. His hand reached for his key, and suddenly a thought occurred to him.
He smelled different! He doesn’t carry the unique tea and soap scene! Heero recalled the incident where he let alcohol took control, and nearly ended up hurting the one person he loved. Even in his drunken state, he remembered the faint, unique scene. It was permanently carved into his mind. This “Wufei” smelled completely different.
Back inside the apartment, Duo was comforting a distressing Wufei.
“Whatever he did, I am sure Heero is sorry by now.” Duo patted gently on Wufei’s back. He had seen Wufei cried before, but not like this.
“No, no.” Wufei hiccupped, “I don’t think we are meant to be together. I make the wrong choice.”
Suddenly feeling his mouth dry, Duo asked, “What do you mean by that?”
“I should have chosen you. You are much nicer to me than him!” Wufei’s hand traced along Duo’s wide open jaw line. “Is it really that much of a surprise?” Wufei pushed the jaws closed, teasingly.
“But, but, but,” For once Duo was absolutely speechless.
“Don’t tell me you are not interested.” Wufei clung to him tighter, smiling, “Am I not pretty? And don’t tell me you never check out my tight ass!”
“Wufei!” Duo cried out, feeling his face hot, and he did not blush easily. He couldn’t believe that had come from the conservative Chinese boy. He had to admit, when he first met Wufei, he did fantasize about the intriguing Chinese boy. Speaking solely from the point of physical, Wufei was very pretty with his delicate features. And he did have a gorgeous body. Practicing katana and martial arts daily had kept his body in perfect shape. But it’s not only that. He attracted people without meaning to do so. However, their relationship developed into a boundless friendship, and Duo didn’t look at Wufei in that light any longer.
He is just upset because of Heero. How am I going to tell him that without hurting his feelings? Duo scratched his head, as Wufei continued to clutch close, his hands not entirely kept to himself.
Heero chose this moment to enter the apartment. He eyed the pair on the floor and pulled out his gun.
“Heero!” Duo stood up, untangling himself from the other boy. “I can explain everything.” Then he realized the gun was not pointed at him, but at Wufei.
“Duo, get away.” Heero ordered, not lowering his gun.
“Duo! Heero is going to kill me!” Wufei shivered in fear, looking over to Duo for help.
“Heero, it’s not what you think. There’s nothing between us!” Duo said, “Why don’t you put down your gun, and we can discuss this, okay?” He didn’t like the open hostility in Heero’s eyes. It looked like he was more than ready to shoot Wufei.
“Duo, Get Away. This person here is NOT Wufei.” Heero took a step closer to the Chinese boy.
“What? Are you out of your mind?” Duo exclaimed.
“Don’t you feel that ‘Wufei’ was acting a little strange ever since he was released from the hospital?” Heero’s lips thinned into a line.
Duo hesitated.
“Duo, I told you. Heero doesn’t want me anymore. He is merely trying to use this excuse to get rid of me, permanently. Of course I am Wufei.” Wufei argued. “Look at me!”
“Heero, why don’t you calm down, and we could talk. Let’s put down the gun first, okay?” Duo moved in between Heero’s gunpoint and Wufei; a big mistake.
Wufei seized the opportunity. He pushed Duo forward, and knocked Heero’s gun out of hand. When the two gundam pilots stumbled to get up, the gun was in Wufei’s hand.
Motioning with his gun, Wufei signaled Heero and Duo to raise their hands over their heads.
“Well, Duo. You should have listened to Heero. He is right, you know.” ‘Wufei’ grinned.
“Who the hell are you?” Duo howled. It was strange to see Wufei with that strange, fanatic gleam in his eyes.
“Why? I’m Wufei, of course.” ‘Wufei’ laughed. Even though the Justice boy was quite fanatical sometimes in his gundam, Heero and Duo had never once heard him released a laughter containing malevolence and pure evil.
“Enough talk. I was going to make it easy for both of you. Heero, if you have fallen for the trap, you could have enjoyed a mind-blowing sex tonight with ‘Wufei’. You don’t know what you missed.” Grinning, ‘Wufei’ continued, “Well, if one of you will give me access to your computer, … , or better yet, retrieved the biology weapon formula, I could get going really soon.”
“Biology weapon formula? The one created by Dr. Katsushika?” Duo thought aloud.
“Ah yes, clever boy.” ‘Wufei’ complimented. “Well, I might as well tell you the whole story. I am …”
“Dr. Katsushika’s partner in crime.” Heero finished for him coldly.
“Oh well, ya, that too. I was going to say ‘lover’ though. Anyway, I escaped after he was caught and put on trial for testing the weapon, 257 counts of murders, and plotting to overtake the world. I was waiting for an opportunity to get hold of the formula. It was a big mistake you came to the hospital that night.”
“You are the owner of the hospital, Dr. Akahito Hatakeda.” Heero said emotionlessly.
“Smart. Anyway, as I was saying, I saw the chance when I recognized you over the security camera for threatening the doctor treating Wufei Chang. If you haven’t made such a scene, I probably wouldn’t even know that my “enemies” were right under my roof. And you brought me Black Jack. He is the only one that could pull off the plot I have in mind. So,” Akahito said with a grin, “After Black Jack finished the surgery, I had both of them kidnapped and transferred out of the hospital. I want Black Jack to perform plastic surgery on me, and made me look exactly like your boyfriend.”
“That’s why we were not allowed to see ‘Wufei’ the first two weeks of his hospitalization.” Duo recalled the whole incident at the hospital.
“Oh well, you have to give me some time to heal with this new ‘mask’, right?” Akahito smiled.
“Where Is Wufei?” Heero asked word by word, the anger in his voice barely contained.
“You think I am going to tell you?” Akahito laughed. “Now, I think it’s about time you retrieved that file for me.”
“We never kept it.”
“What do you mean?” the hand holding the gun was shaking slightly at this revelation.
“We destroyed it, in case some lunatics like you want to get hold of it.” Heero said tonelessly.
“NO!” Akahito screamed, “I don’t believe it! How could you have destroyed it? It was Katsushika’s years of research and work! You bastard! You are both going to die!” He pointed the gun at Duo’s head. “I am sorry you miss your lover’s death, but I will let you witness your best friend’s.”
The gun was fired.
Ta. Ta ta ta ta ta ta.
Nothing came out of it.
Heero moved forward and grabbed the empty gun from ‘Wufei’.
“It’s not loaded. You doctor are not too experienced with guns, huh? If it’s Wufei, he will know it the moment he feels the gun!” Then, pulling a pack of bullets he always kept with him, Heero loaded the weapon and pointed it against Akahito’s forehead.
“Now, you better tell me where Wufei is.”
“What makes you think I kept him alive?” an evil chuckle erupted from Akahito.
Heero stared at him.
“Use your brain, smart boy. I am using his identity. Would I risk having another Wufei around and bust my cover?”
The hand of Perfect Soldier that never shook when holding a gun wavered. Akahito’s grin widen as he saw the fright in Heero’s eyes.
“Take a good look at this face, because this is the last you will ever see your lover’s face!” He laughed and suddenly reached for the gun. Reflectively, Heero squeezed down on the trigger.
BAM!
The bullet blasted Akahito’s head. His body dropped to the floor, but there’s a grin at the tips of his lips that remained even after his heart stopped beating. Did he lose? Maybe not. Maybe he had won in more than one ways.
“NO!” Heero screamed. In his eyes, he saw that he just killed his lover. He just shot ‘Wufei’. Automatically he pointed the gun towards himself.
“Heero~” It was Duo who stopped him. “You didn’t kill Wufei. This is Akahito, with Wufei’s face. Heero~” Duo had to slap him over the face hard, to get the Perfect Soldier out of his hysteria.
“Oh god, oh god.” Heero’s voice caught in his throat. “For a moment I thought I killed Wufei.”
“You didn’t, okay?!” Duo murmured, hugging the other boy closed to him. Maybe now they could both wake up from this nightmare.
*****
DNA test was performed on the corpse to make sure that the person Heero shot was not Wufei, but the criminal with the name Akahito Hatakeda.
They only had one question left: Where is the real Wufei Chang?
The investigation carried on for days, but there was simply no news of either the Chinese boy or Dr. Black Jack. It seemed like they had either vanished into thin air, or a more plausible assumption; dead.
“Heero, please ~ You have interrogated everyone in the hospitals for 3 times, at least. I don’t think they know anything.”
“That bastard said he ‘kidnapped and transferred’ them out of the hospital. There must be eye witness, and others involved.” Heero insisted. “I am going to follow every lead.”
“Did you consider something else that he say?” Duo asked quietly.
Heero spun around, grabbing Duo roughly by the collar, he demanded through clenched teeth, “What Do You Mean?”
“He had no reason to keep Wufei alive, but every reason to see him dead.” Duo was not frightened. He merely felt sympathy towards his friend.
“No, Wufei must be alive!” Heero shouted, raising one hand, about to slap or punch anybody that suggested otherwise. His fist stopped mid air as he saw the sadness in Duo’s eyes. He was not the only person that suffered the lost of the Chinese boy.
“No, he is not dead.” Heero released Duo. Suddenly unable to support his own weight, he collapsed to the floor.
“Wufei is not dead.” Heero whispered to himself over and over; maybe if he said it enough times, he will actually believe it.
*****
Somewhere on earth.
A Chinese boy was gazing at the sky.
“What are you thinking, youngster?” a curious old woman passing by asked.
“Have you ever feel unreal about your life? Everything you know for sure is actually false. But there is no way out of it…”
The old woman nodded her head, “Ah yes, son. When I was as young as you, I believed I am some lost princess, and there was a prince who love me dearly waiting for me somewhere. But, I guess he never found his way to me. Good day, lad.”
The Chinese boy waved her goodbye. Strong wind whipped his shoulder length hair against his face across his delicate features. He made no move to get the hair out of his way as he continued to stare afar, lost in thoughts.

(1) Black Jack – by Tezuka Osamu . I borrowed him because I believe he is the only doctor that can pull off the surgeries. If you have never read his manga, you should. Here’s a website about him: www.animeart.com/blackjack
(2) Sorry. I guess ‘Wufei’ didn’t even make any real appearance in this story except for the very first part. But he will be in the next story!

IF YOU LOVE ME, SET ME FREE
by Bea
A boy leaned casually against the high wall with his arms folded in front of his chest. While there was completely no emotion on his hard features, his cobalt eyes were scanning like a hawk at the crowd of students on the other side of the gate. He had been standing in the same position for hours, never once taking his eyes off the entrance of the university.
If you love him, set him free. Dr. Black Jack’s words echoed in Heero’s mind. His hand tightened unconsciously on the piece of paper in his pocket. It was a letter he received two days ago when he was about to commit suicide, a letter that gave him hope once again.
***** ~ Begin Flashback ~ *****
“Heero! Open up! Heero!” Fluttering a letter in his hand, Duo flung the bedroom door opened.
“What the hell are you doing!” He was shocked out of his skin when he saw Heero with a gun in his mouth; his intension obvious. Ever since Heero started to believe that Wufei was no longer alive, he had considered taking his own life. He was going to do it tonight. Heero sighed inwardly as he realized it was going to be difficult because Duo was going to stop him. But one cannot really stop a person if his only wish was death … …
“You stupid! Stupid fool!” Duo scolded and took the weapon away from Heero. “What do you think Wufei is going to feel if he came back and see you dead?”
“Wufei is already dead.” Heero said dully.
“No, I just received a letter from Black Jack …” Duo waved the letter in his hand, and before he can utter another word, the letter was snatched out of his hold.
Mr. Heero Yuy,
When I received the news of Dr. Akahito Hatakeda’s death, I no longer have the obligation to keep quiet.
Dr. Akahito Hatakeda was the son of the doctor who saved my life. I cannot deny him anything.
However, I kept my promise to you; Wufei is alive and well. Unfortunately, to ensure Dr. Akahito Hatakeda’s cover, I erased portion of Wufei Chang’s memory, and replaced it with a set of make up one.
Be caution. Any attempt to bring back his ‘real’ memory could cause permanent brain damage.
Although he is under another identity right now, who is it to say that he is not happier? He had completely forgotten his training as a gundam pilot, his role during the war, and YOU. But it also meant he forgot the explosion of his colony, or the deaths of his love ones. Maybe it’s a blessing to him to live a different life. At least, he is free of the shadow of the war, and the pain of seeing his colony exploded.
You have every reason not to agree with me. I am sorry of the situation. Below is the address of the university he is currently attending.
Remember: If you love him, set him free
Yours sincerely,
BJ
***** ~ End Flashback ~ *****
The expressionless mask on Heero’s face shattered as he saw a group of 5 to 6 students approaching the gate. He stared intently at the figure closest to the left. It was a Chinese boy, dressed in a pair of leisure blue jeans, and a white T-shirt. His hair was about shoulder length, and being let loose for once. When the wind blew, it covered half the boy’s face.
It’s him. It’s him. How different he looked! Heero’s heart pounded so fast he thought it was going to burst out of his chest. The boy didn’t pay the slightest attention to him as he passed Heero. More accurately, he saw Heero standing there, but there’s no recognition at all. He released a rich laughter as his friends said something funny.
“Professor Hughes is going to drop his pants when you make your ‘kick ass’ presentation tomorrow, Wufei.” A guy with a strong Irish accent commented.
“O’Neil, that’s crude! Who want to see that old man’s butt?!” Another retorted.
“Whatever~ Thanks to Wufei here, we are all going to get an A in this Fluid Mechanics class!” Angus, the tallest among his group members, said.
“I am just doing my part.” The Chinese boy who everyone had been referring to said with a smile.
“Wufei~ You are too humble! Hey, the bus is here. We better go. Wufei, are you going to be okay walking home alone?” Angus stayed one step behind. At a height of 6 feet 5, he looked like a giant standing beside his slight Chinese classmate.
“Yes, it’s only 10 minutes walking distance from here. I will be fine. Thanks for the concern. See you tomorrow in class!” Wufei waved as his friends jumped onto the bus. He turned on his heel and was ready to go home.
Heero closed his eyes tightly. He couldn’t stop the tears that threatened to burst out or the howling that he wanted to release. Fate is too cruel! There was his lover, and yet he couldn’t even speak to him!
Heero trembled like a drowning man. Alright, Wufei. I have seen with my own eyes. You are happy. This might be how you would have grown up to be if you never have to endure all those sufferings and wars. This ‘fake identity’ might actually suite you better. I am out of the picture. I love you, Wufei. As long as you are happy … I will go…
//If you love me, set me free… …//
Heero couldn’t remember where had he heard this phrase before, but it echoed in his heart as he made the toughest decision: he was not going to disturb Wufei’s new life, a peaceful life, one without him.
The decision stabbed through his heart like a knife. He felt his knees go weak. Unable to hold up any longer, he stumbled forward.
“Hey hey, are you okay?” a hand gripped at his elbow, holding him up. He looked up and saw Wufei staring at him with concern. His mind chose that moment to shut down, plunging him into the welcoming darkness.
*****
Heero slowly opened his eyes, and took in the surroundings. He was settled on a couch, in a sitting room in somebody’s apartment. The familiarity of the atmosphere struck him for an unknown reason, and he sat up from where he was. I am certain I have never been to this apartment, and yet … … He shook his head slightly, clearing his mind. There was a pleasant aroma coming from the kitchen.
That’s the first place to investigate then.
He stopped dead in his track as he saw who had apparently brought him home. In front of him was a scene that could only be described as “homely”. Wufei, with his cartoon dragon apron, was fixing some mouth watering Chinese food. He tasted the soup, and stuck out his tongue in the cutest way as the hot liquid burned his lips.
Heero couldn’t help but smile. His love looked so adorable! If only this was their love nest! He could picture this as a typical evening. He would return home from Preventer to find his lover preparing some delicious meal, while their conversations danced around from the latest spying technology to Professor Smith picked his nose constantly during lectures.
The smile died from his lips as he recalled the true, hopeless situation. Didn’t I already make up my mind to leave for good? I don’t want to risk causing Wufei brain damage. Why am I still daydreaming about something that will never happen!
“Ouch!” Wufei let out a small cry of panic as he accidentally knocked over the saucer pan containing boiling soup. Without thinking, Heero rushed forward and physically lifted Wufei out of the way of the falling pot and its steaming contents.
Wufei stared at the ruined soup, and then at his own condition; he was lifted horizontally with both feet above the ground, and cradled against a strong chest. Although he was glad someone came to his rescue, saving him from being burned, he did not appreciate being cradled like a baby.
A pair of intense cobalt eyes stared down at him, making him forego his objection for the moment. Where have I seen this pair of eyes before? Hm… A very striking color! Forceful and passionate … Wait a minute, Wufei! Where did that thought come from?!
“Hey thanks. You can put me down now.” Wufei struggled to get down as Heero released his burden reluctantly.
Wufei straightened up a bit, before starting to lecture his guest, “What are you doing here? You shouldn’t have gotten up! Did you know that you fainted outside of the university? Nobody knows who you are, so I volunteered to take care of you.” He swiped a strain of hair out of his eyes and emphasized on his ‘kindness’, “I was going to cook you the best shark fin soup you can ever hope to find in this universe, but looks like it’s ruined.” Wufei shrugged, and moved to clean up the mess he had made in the kitchen.
“Good to know that you are as arrogant as before.” Heero murmured with a half smile.
“What did you just say?” Wufei didn’t bother to turn around, “Mind you, I have very good hearings!”
He then set the silverware and invited Heero to the dinner table. They enjoyed the delicious food in pleasant silence. It was after dinner that Wufei started asking bits and bites of Heero.
“… So, why are you at the university gate this morning? I was told that you were there for hours, at least, before you fainted.” Wufei was doing the dishes while Heero leaned against the doorframe, watching him.
“I went there to see the person I love with all my heart. A tragic accident forced him to leave my side. When I saw him this morning, he had changed so much. He had new friends and a new life, where I don’t belong.” Heero suddenly decided to tell the truth. What difference will it make anyway?
Wufei paused in his task. Heaving a sigh, “You are dumped, huh? I am sorry about that.”
“Well, he didn’t really mean to do that. So I don’t blame him at all.” Heero replied.
“You are truly noble then.” Wufei finished the last plate, and wiped his hand on the kitchen tower, “I don’t think I would be able to think that way if I am in your shoes. What he did is ‘injustice’. I will probably be after him with my katana.” Then, puzzled by his own language, Wufei frowned, “That is, if I have a katana and that I know how to use it, I guess.” Shaking his head, he brushed it aside.
“So, Heero. Where do you live? Do you want me to find a ride for you to get home? It’s kind of late now.”
Heero shook his head very slowly. “I came by the first flight, and I went straight to the university.”
“Oh,” feeling sorry for the poor guy, Wufei offered, “You can stay in the spare room for tonight if you have no where to go.”
“Wufei, would you consider renting the room to me?” an idea suddenly occurred to Heero. Okay, so I couldn’t tell him who he really is, or who I really am, but that doesn’t mean I can’t stay close and get him to fall in love with me again and begin a new life here. Getting excited by this sudden plan, Heero looked expectantly at Wufei.
“Why would you want to stay here?” Wufei was not about to accept a stranger into his home that easily.
“Just the thought of staying in the same city with my ex-lover comforts me.” Heero answered, unable to stop the trembling of his voice. Wufei, please don’t kick me out!
That must have done the trick.
“Alright, I am looking for a roommate anyway. We can split the rent and utilities.” Wufei agreed.
“Great.” Trying not to appear over-excited and thus raised unnecessary suspicion, Heero forced down his grin, “I don’t know how to thank you for saving me the trouble of apartments hunting!” Maybe he can give this a shot; adjusting himself into Wufei’s new life, gaining his love once again without bringing back the foul memory.
“Alright!” Wufei smiled, “The other room was completely furnished. You can sleep there tonight and move your stuff in tomorrow.”
As Heero lay on his bed, wide awake, he thanked whatever god for giving him a chance to stay close to Wufei.
*****
By the time Heero woke up, it was around 7a.m..
“Good morning, Wufei.” He saw Wufei sitting on the breakfast table, reading newspaper. “You woke up early. I thought the university doesn’t begin lessons until 9a.m.?”
“Good morning Heero.” Wufei stretched in his chair and took another sip of his tea. “I wish I wouldn’t wake up so early. It’s like there’s a biology clock that wakes me up at 5a.m. everyday. I have this feeling that I need to be doing something but don’t know what.”
Your katas, Wufei. You have been doing that for the past 10 years, your body knows better than your head. Heero pointed out mentally, but didn’t comment on it. I wish your subconscious recall our love as well. He smiled a bit sadly.
##
Wufei got off his Linear Elasticity class and was on his way home when he saw Heero waiting at the gate the university.
“Heero~ What are you doing here?” Wufei asked.
“I got a job at the university as the computer lab assistant. My schedule is pretty much the same as yours. So I thought I would wait for you and walk home together.” Heero shrugged and started walking. “This isn’t exactly the greatest part of the town, you know.”
Wufei looked stunned for a second, then he smiled, “I never took that into account. Thanks for being so considerate.”
A friendship built up quickly between Heero and Wufei. Heero would wait for Wufei at the university gate around 4p.m., and walked him home. Then they would fix dinner together and maybe enjoyed a show on discovery channel on the couch before going to bed. Life seemed perfect.
*****
“Heero~ This place is beautiful~” Wufei exclaimed. They went hiking at a nearby mountain. It was late afternoon when they reached the top.
Heero gave him a smirk that meant “I told you so”. His expression softened as he recalled the numerous occasions where they stayed together in the woods in the past, either to spy on Oz, or to escape their attention. This was probably the first time where they were doing it for fun. And we got to sleep in the same tent. Heero thought with a beam.
“Why are you smiling? Do you know something that I don’t?” Wufei asked as he set the campfire and took out the food.
Heero shook his head. He loved watching Wufei. The Chinese boy worked with such grace and he didn’t even know it.
“Hey, if you are not going to help, you are not getting any of the food.” Wufei threatened.
Hours later, the two boys had finished eating, and were watching the starless sky.
“It reminded me of space.” Wufei suddenly said. “I know, I have never leave the earth sphere, never been to space before. But somehow, I believe I know how it feels to be in space. Does it make any sense?” He gave a small chuckle.
“It makes more sense than you think, Wufei.” Heero replied sadly.
“You think so?” Wufei smiled, unaware of the impact of what he just mentioned.
“So, did you grow up here?” Heero couldn’t resist the urge to find out what kind of memory they implanted into Wufei’s head.
“Well,” Wufei thought for a second, “China. I came here a year ago.”
Heero listened. “Details?”
“Well, I was shot in the chest not too long ago. I should have died, but I have a really good doctor. But even then, I suffered memory lost as a side effect. I don’t recall a lot of things, especially details from the past.”
“Oh.”
“By the way, do you still miss your lover?” Wufei asked, yawning.
“Yes, every damn day.” Heero murmured, as the tired boy fell asleep with his head on his shoulder. He gently hugged the sleepy boy closer, grateful to the simple fact that he was able to hold Wufei.
The hiking trip was an unexpected pleasure, Heero considered; but the next day was a disaster, one where Heero made a mess out of things that were going pretty well.
They arrived at home about 4p.m. from the mountain, and Wufei was surprised to find somebody waiting outside his door.
“Angus~ What are you doing here?” It was the tall guy from Wufei’s Fluid Mechanics’ class.
“Wufei! You didn’t come to the group meeting this morning, I thought something was wrong.”
“Oh no! I had completely forgotten about it.” Wufei bang at his forehead, and opened the door. “Come in.”
“I brought you what we discussed this morning.”
“You could have just emailed it to me. But, thanks! By the way, this is my roommate, Heero Yuy.” Wufei introduced them, “Heero, this is Angus Skinner.”
Heero didn’t like this Angus one bit. He stood behind Wufei and put his hand over his shoulder, stating his ‘ownership’. With his death glare, he signaled the big boy to stay away.
That exchange did not go unnoticed by Wufei. “Angus, let me get you some tea.” He simply said and shrugged out of Heero’s hand. He was going to have a serious talk with Heero afterwards.
Angus left not long after. Heero sat at a corner in the sitting room, anger building up as Wufei took a little too long bidding Angus goodbye. He stood up and peered out of the window just in time to see Angus kissing Wufei goodbye on the cheeks. A hot flash of jealousy shot through him.
Wufei came in through the door, crossed his arms and ‘looked’ at Heero. For one moment, the posture was all too familiar, and Heero had the delusion Wufei was back to his old self.
Wufei was furious, but Heero beat him to the question.
“What do you think you are doing, Wufei!” Heero roared.
“What do you mean?” Wufei couldn’t believe Heero was yelling at him.
“Who is he? How can you let him kiss you?” Heero grabbed his shoulder and began shaking him.
“Let go of me!” Wufei shouted, “I have been dating Angus. So what’s wrong to let him kiss me? Besides, it’s completely none of your business!”
The last sentence sent a spear into Heero’s heart. Blinded by fury, he screamed, “You love me, Wufei! Get your damn memory back to your head. You are my lover!”
Complete shock was a fitting description to Wufei’s expression.
“What the hell are you talking about? Are you crazy?”
“I am telling you; you are the lover that abandoned me!” Heero couldn’t control his shaking. Let’s get this over with. I don’t care. I want my old Wufei back; the arrogant, aloof Wufei that loves me. “You worked at the Preventer after the war ended. During the war, you are a gundam pilot. You piloted Nataku. Anyway, we were working on a case and you were shot. At the hospital, you were kidnapped while unconscious and somebody else pretended to be you. They erased your memory and made up new ones.”
“Are you crazy?” Wufei shouted, his eyes wide.
“I am not crazy!” Heero countered, “You said so yourself; you have the feelings of this life is unreal. You felt you have been to space when your memory told you differently.”
“If that’s the case, then why didn’t you tell me who I am when you first met me?”
“Because your past contained too many dark shadows, I thought it might be better to let you have a new life; one which you seemed pretty happy. Somebody once told me; if you love somebody, set him free. But I can’t. I tried. I just cannot do it!”
Silence.
“Wufei, please believe me.” Heero didn’t know what else to say.
“Heero, I think you should pack.” Wufei said. “I don’t want an illuminative man wondering in my apartment.”
“I am not leaving.” Heero refused to go.
“Fine. Then I am calling the cops.” Wufei turned away, but he was spun around, and he found himself in the tight embrace of Heero.
“What are you doing? Let go!” Wufei struggled furiously.
“We were kissing before you were shot and all these madness began, do you remember?” Heero whispered in an almost haunted voice. He pressed his lips down against the boy within his arms. It was soft and gentle, full of love and sadness, as Heero tried to evoke Wufei’s memory.
Wufei went limp in Heero’s embrace. The feeling of this man’s lips on him, the taste of the mouth, the way his hands entangled in the mop of wild hair, the scene of Heero, all seemed so familiar to him.
When he was released from the kiss, he found himself wanting more.
“What was going on?” He clutched at Heero in fear. He was loosing grip on reality. Who is this man? Or more importantly, is he speaking the truth? Who am I?
“AH~” He screamed in pain as an intense headache wretched his brain.
//It could cause brain damage if you tried to force the memory back.//
The thought crossed Heero’s mind and he hastily released Wufei.
“Wufei, Wufei, listen to me,” Heero called out softly until the dark pupils focused on him, “Don’t think about this too hard, okay? It’s alright if you never get your memory back. I love you as you are right now.”
“But …” Wufei hesitated. “What if I can never love you like you said I did before?”
Heero wiped a string of hair out of Wufei’s face. Smiling slightly, “Did you just admit you have feelings for me?”
“Well, yes I guess… I … I’m not entirely certain about what you have said, or about my own feelings, but … I do feel something during the kiss. Something … like … love…”
“Then that’s enough.” Heero kissed him lightly again. “Just remember, I love you.”
*****
“Wufei, do you want to go out this Saturday night?” Angus asked.
“Sorry, Angus. I don’t think so.” Wufei rejected gently.
“Why? You have been cold to me lately. Did I do something wrong that makes you refuse to go on dates with me anymore?”
“Oh well,” Wufei decided to be honest, “I am in a serious relationship with Heero right now. I am not seeing anyone anymore.”
“What?” Angus exclaimed. “But… but … but… how could you?!”
“What do you mean?” Wufei’s face darkened, “We were not in a relationship. Why can’t I be with Heero?!”
“You are mine!” Angus cried out, reaching out to grab Wufei. His hand was battled away and somebody stepped in between him and his target.
“It’s you! Bastard! You steal my boyfriend away.” Angus raised his fist at the cold face boy in front of him.
“Wufei is never your boyfriend. And I suggest you keep away from him.” Heero blocked his punch easily. With a push, Angus fell to the floor. He looked at Heero and Wufei with hatred as they walked away.
“Wufei is mine. Mine!”
*****
“Heero~” Heero turned around hearing a familiar voice called his name.
“Duo? Why are you here?”
“What? Not happy to see me?” The cheerful boy knocked him in the elbow.
“Heero, who is this?” Wufei asked a little curiously. He was completely taken off by surprise when the braided boy threw himself around him and gave him a bear hug.
“WUFEI~ I miss you so much!”
“Get off Wufei, you monkey!” Heero untangled the American boy from his astounded boyfriend.
“Ah yes, he doesn’t remember.” Duo sighed and released Wufei. “Well then, I am Duo Maxwell. I am your friend, Wufei.”
“Oh, okay. Hi Duo, I guess.” Wufei blinked at the animated teenager in front of him.
“Wow~ Heero! Did you hear that? He called me Duo, instead of Maxwell. How nice!”
“Shut up, Duo.” Heero commanded. Duo was giving him a headache. “Why are you here again?”
“On duty, man. I know you don’t want any of us to see ~” Duo gave a jerk of his head towards Wufei, then continued, “But I was following a case here. Anyway, there might be trouble for all of us. Some of Dekim’s men were here, planning on something.”
Heero nodded, taking in the information.
*****
Wufei was bored.
Heero was out with Duo doing some investigations, and he was left at home. He jumped off the couch when the phone rang, thinking perhaps Heero was coming back.
“Hello? Oh, hi Angus.” Wufei’s face fell. “What? Meet you now? What for? Group project. This hour? Okay, alright. I will be there.”
He changed quickly and scrambled a note for Heero, letting him know he was going to school to do a project. He never made it to school, however.
##
Half way down the street, turning a dark corner, Wufei was surprised to see Angus waiting for him with another 4 men. Having a bad feeling, he was going to turn around when he felt a dart shot at his back. He collapsed to the ground, unconscious.
*****
“So these followers of Dekim want to get our Gundams, huh?” Heero asked after Duo updated him on this case.
“Also to kill us for revenge. Heero, you better be careful, you destroyed his plan after all.” Duo advised. “You are probably his primary target.”
“Oh Shit!” Heero suddenly jumped out of his chair.
“What’s wrong?”
“Dekim was a man that did not forgive betrayal. Wouldn’t his followers be after Wufei’s blood?”
The fear grew as he called home and there was no answer.
*****
Wufei struggled to wake up, only to find himself in another nightmare. His hands were tied behind and he was lying on a hard floor.
“Pretty boy, I am glad you decided to join us.”
There was a flickering light. A man holding a needle came closer, an oily smile on his face.
“Who are you?” Wufei asked weakly.
“Wufei, don’t tell me you don’t remember me.” When Wufei showed no sign of recognition, the man laughed, “I am Sadao Ohmae, Dekim’s most reliable assistant. Why? We even worked together for a while. Have you forgotten everything?”
“Sadao, what are you going to do with him?” Angus asked nervously close by.
“Don’t worry. I won’t destroy his beautiful face. After all, I have promised him to you, and you wouldn’t want a broken toy, would you? Would you?” Sadao raised his voice when there was no answer from Angus.
“No…” Angus shivered and nearly dropped the light in his hand.
“Why are you so afraid?” Sadao laughed at Angus’ anxiety. “I guarantee you, I will give you an obedient pet, okay? Isn’t that what you have asked from me, and your reason to help me lured him out?
Angus nodded hesitantly.
Sadao returned his attention to Wufei. “Now, tell me where your gundam was hidden.”
When Wufei showed no corporation, Sadao grinned like a cat, “Well, do you know that torture is an art? Let’s see how much pain you can take before you break.” Seeing Angus was about to intercept again, Sadao waved a hand, “Don’t worry. I will not break his skin, or make him bleed as much as a drop of blood.”
Returning his attention to the boy on the floor, he practically purred, “See this?” He raised the needle in his hand, “Well, this drug will increase your pain nerve system by thousands times. Afterwards, even the caress of a piece of leaf on your skin will feel like a knife cutting. And because there’s no real injury on your body, you could endure thousands ‘cuts’ and yet very much alive. Hahaha~”
With the explanation, he pulled Wufei onto his lap as the Chinese boy struggled weakly. He laughed at Wufei’s helplessness and injected the drug into Wufei’s system.
Pain.
More Pain.
Wufei screamed again and again until his voice was completely hoarse. But the pain wasn’t going away. He felt like somebody was slashing him up with a knife, although Sadao was merely stroking his skin with a leaf.
“Now, tell me, where is your gundam?”
“I don’t know. Somebody blocked my memory a while ago. I have no idea what you are talking about.”
His words were not believed, and the torture continued until he fainted.
Wufei whimpered in the dark. It hurt too much! Nobody was touching him with anything, but the dust on the ground rubbing against his back felt like thousands needles.
Sadao was looking at his prisoner with a thoughtful smile.
“Maybe he is speaking the truth. It was possible he did lose his memory.” He rubbed his nose unpleasantly. “I haven’t seen anyone that wouldn’t break after two days of constant extreme pain.”
“So, you will not torture him for the information anymore?” Angus asked hopefully.
“Are you nuts? Of course I am going to get it out of him. But I guess I should restore his memory first.”
“How are you going to do that?” Angus asked; he was beginning to regret his action.
“There’s an experimental drug that could fix up ‘erased’ memory. Maybe I can try that on him…”
*****
“Heero, calm down! It’s no use for you to hit the wall.” Duo pushed Heero into a seat.
“Dekim’s men must have gotten him. I had to get him out. That bastard Angus, if I see him again, I will tear him into pieces with my bare hands!” Heero promised darkly.
“Could you do that after I give you the information?” A quiet voice inquired.
Duo was glad he moved fast enough in blocking Heero from shooting the guy.
“Heero, he might know where Wufei is!”
“Alright,” Heero grabbed Angus by his hair. He was much shorter than Angus, but the large man couldn’t wriggle out of his hold. “Tell me where Wufei is and I will grant you a quick death!”
“Release me so that I can talk!” Angus begged. Heero threw him to the floor and stared at him.
“I didn’t mean to help Sadao. I just want to get Wufei back.” Angus murmured. “But this Sadao, he is mad. Mad! I know he is going to kill Wufei.”
“Where. Is. He?”
*****
It was another day of darkness, but at least the pain had subdued somewhat.
Wufei trembled on the floor. He was cold, hungry and drained. There was not a single wound on his body, but his nerve system was overloaded with pain.
“Let’s try something new today, my dear.”
He recognized faintly this was the voice of the mad man, before feeling a stabbing pain on his arm as he received another injection.
The drug worked its way into his bloodstream. Soon, he felt the worst headache he had ever experienced in his life. It’s like somebody just injected acid into his brain, and it was slowly dissolving his skull.
Images and voices that he couldn’t quite grasp at began to flash in front of him.
// In a prison cell, Duo was smiling as images of gundams played on the wall.
"Wufei, don't you think my Deathscythe Hell looks cool?"
"What's wrong? Hey, don't tell me you're dead. Wufei, come on..."
"Wufei, you're pretty incredible, even till the end you still don't give up"
Quatre: Aaah. Wufei, I'm happy that you came.
Treize: "My name is Treize Khushrenada. I've won."
Heero: Zero! Show me the way!
[Alt-Long breaks through a wall near Zero]
Wufei: Here.... You forgot this.
Heero: Mission acknowledged. //
Many images flipped through until finally a single person's replayed over and over.
Heero, you didn't lie to me, I remembered … everything …
“Look at you!” A voice penetrated his haze mind, “You are completely wasted. Maybe I should just give you over to that Angus boy and let him fuck you till you bleed to death.”
Wufei focused on the voice and found himself back to reality.
A hand was stroking his cheeks as the hateful voice continued. “You are pretty though. I wonder why I never see it before. You are sleeping with Pilot 01, aren’t you? I couldn’t get a hold on him, but I guess I could hurt him a great deal more through hurting you, don’t you agree?” Then hand was pawning over his body, lingering at the opening of his shirt.
Wufei struggled, but all he managed was letting out a pitiful moan. That gained him a nasty laugh from Sadao.
“You are weak, Wufei Chang. Weak!” He moved down to kiss the helpless boy.
Weak?
Wufei’s hand moved around until he felt an object on the floor. Grabbing it, he waited for the older man to lean down, inches away from his face. Wufei opened his eyes and in a flash he stabbed the injection needle precisely into Sadao’s throat.
“AH~” That’s the only noise Sadao managed to release. He stared down at his throat in disbelief. How could this have happened?
A single drop of blood seeped from the fatal wound as the man let out his last breath.
Wufei pushed the dead body on top of him aside and struggled to stand up.
“Nobody called me weak and get away with it. You, are no exception.” Wufei said, almost expressionlessly, to the corpse on the floor.
The door swung open, and Wufei raised his arms to block the sudden strong light. When his eyes finally got used to the light, he recognized the boys standing there; his best friend, Duo Maxwell, and his lover, Heero Yuy.
“Wufei!” That sounded nearly too emotional from the normally cold Perfect Soldier.
Wufei looked at them with an arch eyebrow. Limping slightly, he walked towards Heero until they were almost nose-to-nose. Then, pushing Heero against the wall almost violently, he pressed his lips against the other boy, hungry for the taste and feel of his lover. Heero kissed him back with an equal passion. None seemed to mind their audience or the dead body on the floor. They were glad to be together after all this mess. And none were good with words at their current emotional state. Kiss, was a much better alternative.
*****
It was days later when everything settled down.
Heero and Wufei were at a mountain top resort, enjoying themselves. Seated beside a fireplace, Wufei laid lazily in the curve of Heero’s arms, his back against Heero’s chest. Heero could smell the fresh scene of woods in Wufei’s hair. Nothing felt better than listening to each other’s comforting, soothing heartbeats.
“Heero, would you miss me?” Wufei suddenly asked.
“What do you mean?” Heero’s fingers were stroking at Wufei’s bare arms absentmindedly.
“Well, the one that’s less arrogant, more communicative, more ‘normal’.”
Heero thought for a while, comparing the two ‘versions’ of Wufei he had known.
“There’s no real difference, you know.” Heero said after a while, “No matter if you are the Gundam Pilot 05, or the genius scholar at the university, you’re … you. Honor and justice may not matter that much when you are a student, but you took me in and cared for me when I fainted outside of the university.” Heero bent forward and placed a kiss lovingly on Wufei’s neck. “Oh, and you are as arrogant as before. You said you made the best shark fin soup in the universe, remember?”
“And I do!” Wufei insisted, his tone laced with contentment. “I am glad we are together.”
“Me too, Wufei, I love you.”
“You know something,” Wufei reached for Heero’s hand and put it over his chest, at the position of his heart, “You are locked in my heart. Don’t ever think of being set free!”
